Vasculitis Nurse Training

This course offers an exceptional opportunity to expand your expertise and make a meaningful impact on the care of patients with vasculitis.

The value of specialist nurses to support patients with complex diseases and treatments is widely acknowledged and yet provision of on-the-job training is limited. Our course aims to bridge this gap by providing a three day programme of specialist vasculitis training and experience to nurses working in the UK.

What was most useful about the Vasculitis Nurse Training Course?

"I had a lot of questions and all those were answered, broadened my knowledge base and pulled together parts of knowledge I already had. Made me think about my role and the need to expand service and make changes however small."

"The whole course was eye opening to me. As someone with little knowledge of vasculitis, I was able to learn more about this complex disease and the treatments available. Connecting with colleagues from different Trusts was also an enriching experience."

"It provided an immersive experience to participants giving them real-world access in the management of vasculitis including research."

"Networking with colleagues but especially those in a different field (renal). Reassured that I do have Vasculitis knowledge. Empowered to improve my care for patients with Vasculitis. Had the absolute best time."

"Interactive sessions- visit to the ward, outpatient as well as patients' interview."

"Introduction to Vasculitis by Prof David Jayne and Immunology session - very well explained."

"I learnt loads about research, which was quite new to me. Meeting patients and hearing their insights was brilliant – really added a different prospective."

Was there anything you would like to take back to implement in your area of work?
  • During this course, I had the opportunity to meet delegates from other trusts and gained insight into how different trusts operate. This experience prompted me to return with several questions for my medical team, particularly regarding our guidelines for treating vasculitis patients. I have scheduled a Teams meeting with one of the doctors to discuss these matters in detail.
  • Potential to improve renal autoimmune nurse led service in my trust and will take back nurse-led clinics to generate income.
  • I would like to implement a nurse clinic for newly diagnosed patients and an advice line system. But will have to be discussed and plan with my team.
  • Dedicated nurse telephone clinic to discuss patient's issues.
  • Might consider implementing MMF monitoring and review our cyclophosphamide protocol. I'd like to explore the rationale behind our current approach and look at the option of reduce methylprednisolone exposure as pre-medication before infusion.
  • I'd like to share the helpline triage tool with other nurses in my department and look into uniting our Avacopan blood monitoring protocol with other centres for consistency.
